Kevin Puts: River's Rush [West Coast Premiere]
Philip Glass: Piano Concerto No. 2, After Lewis and Clark (Paul Barnes, piano and R. Carlos Nakai, Native American flute) [West Coast Premiere]
Steve Reich: Tehillim (Tapestry, vocal ensemble)

This Saturday night concert includes the work of Kevin Puts and two of the undisputed masters of their generation: Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Puts is a rising star in the symphonic universe, currently commissioned to write works for Evelyn Glennie and Yo-Yo Ma. He will join us for the West Coast Premiere of his latest piece, River’s Rush. Commissioned for the symphony of Saint Louis, a city that sits near the confluence of two great rivers (the Mississippi and the Missouri), the work draws its inspiration from the movement of water and its surging energy as it courses downstream. In Philip Glass’ latest piano concerto, After Lewis and Clark, he follows the great 1804 expedition as the explorers leave Saint Louis to travel upstream on that same Missouri River on their quest for a water route to the Pacific. Cabrillo Festival will present the West Coast Premiere and features the soloists for whom the work was written: pianist Paul Barnes and Native American flute virtuoso R. Carlos Nakai. Glass’ three-movement concerto begins with “The Vision,” a “musical steamroller” conveying the drive and determination required to embark on that remarkable journey. The second movement “Sacagawea” is named after the Shoshone Indian woman who became Lewis and Clark‘s indispensable companion, and it conveys a mood of dark, lyrical contemplation mixed with a more festive traditional Shoshone theme. The final movement, “The Land,” is a gloriously expansive theme reflecting the vastness of the land explored by Lewis and Clark. In a spectacular finale, Alsop celebrates the 70th birthday of preeminent composer Steve Reich with his seminal work, Tehillim. Boston-based vocal ensemble, Tapestry, will join the orchestra in this setting of Psalms, called by some a “watershed” for Reich, and an “inspired creation that is at once uplifting, affirmative and fully conveys the sheer joy of musical expression.”
