Cabrillo Festival and Kuumbwa Jazz Center present electric guitarist MARC RIBOT AT THE KUUMBWAFriday, August 12 8:00pm Kuumbwa Jazz Center Friday Night performance featuring New York-based electric guitarist Marc Ribot in a solo concert at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center — "Now celebrating 30 years of great music." As a teen, Marc Ribot studied with his mentor, Haitian classical guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus. In 1978, Ribot crossed the river to New York City, where he served as sideman for such musicians as jazz organist Jack McDuff and legendary soul shouter Wilson Pickett. He began his five-year stint as a member of John Lurie's innovative and influential Downtown jazz ensemble, the Lounge Lizards, in 1984. It was then that Marc's playing caught the ear of a number of artists who shared his interest in amalgamating disparate musical traditions. He performed on some of these singer/songwriter's finest records, including Elvis Costello's Spike, Mighty Like a Rose, and Kojak Variety; Marianne Faithful's Blazing Away; and Tom Waits' Rain Dogs, Big Time, Frank's Wild Years, Mule Variations, and Real Gone. Experience the Ribot solo sound in person this summer, when he makes his Kuumbwa Jazz Center debut! |
