| The Cabrillo Festival’s Free Family Concerts have become legendary—a staple in the musical education and upbringing of area youngsters, and a no less entertaining and engaging experience for their parents. It starts with a “petting zoo-style” tour of the orchestra, then returns to the theatre for a grand concert experience with the full Cabrillo Festival Orchestra. The concert begins with Machine, a rousing opener by Jennifer Higdon conducted by Cabrillo’s Assistant Conductor Carolyn Kuan. |

| Then Maestra Marin Alsop takes to the podium for the West Coast Premiere of Michael Daugherty’s Troyjam. Commissioned by the National Symphony, Troyjam takes listeners on a 20-minute symphonic tour in the tradition of Prokofieff’s Peter and the Wolf and Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Daugherty joined forces with acclaimed poet-classicist Anne Carson to create a work that introduces young audiences to classic Greek drama through a unique retelling of Homer’s epic tale, The Iliad. Special guest Marco Barricelli, new Artistic Director of Shakespeare Santa Cruz, will narrate this orchestral fantasy recreating the battle between brave warrior Achilles and his arch-nemesis Hektor during the Trojan War. But this story takes an unexpected turn when forces choose to make music not war! It’s a must-see family experience. (Tickets are free and available at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium Box Office beginning June 16.) |
