Saturday Night performance featuring four tour de force works for
orchestra, two participating composers, two West Coast Premieres
and the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop.
David T. Little: Screamer!a
three-ring blur for orchestra [West Coast Premiere]
Christopher Rouse: Concerto
per Corde [West Coast Premiere]
Oliver Knussen: Flourish
with Fireworks
Jennifer Higdon: Concerto
for Orchestra
It's quintessential Cabrillo when Jennifer Higdon returns for the
performance of her Concerto for Orchestra, constructed
after Bartòk's famous five-movement model. With echoes of
Ravel and Bernstein, Higdon's Concerto enjoyed rocket-ride success
with its Philadelphia Orchestra premiere. And Christopher Rouse's
music is back! Concerto per Corde is a tribute to
Dmitri Shostakovich organized around the German notation D-S-C-H
(D, E-flat, C, B), which was the great Russian's musical signature.
Oliver Knussen's Flourish with Fireworks is a musical
homage to yet another great Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky, weaving
brief quotations from Stravinsky's early orchestra piece Feu d'artifice
("Fireworks"), and built around another set of initials:
L.S.O. (London Symphony Orchestra) and M.T.T. (Michael Tilson Thomas)
for whom the work was written and dedicated. David T. Little joins
us for the West Coast Premiere of his Screamer!a three
ring blur for orchestra. "Screamer" is the nickname
given to circus marches, generally taken at breakneck speeds and
ending abruptly with a B-flat major chord as soon as the action
in the ring has concluded. Little's five-minute Screamer!
imagines the circus utterly out of control and kicks off the evening
in ecstatic style. (A Talkback Session with Marin Alsop, the composers,
and members of the Festival Orchestra follows the concert.)
