Wladyslaw Szpilman: Ballet Scene
Szpilmans Ballet Scene was composed in August 1968 and commissioned
by a ballet company (still unknown to historians), to be part of a fairy
tale ballet. Szpilman already had an independent orchestra piece
in mind when he composed the piece. It was recorded by the Symphonie Orchestra
of the Polish Radio under the batton of Szpilman's friend Stefan Rachon
some weeks after the composition was completed, in a recording session
together with the Little Overture. As the work was never published and
Szpilman never did any promotion for his compositions, the first performance
after 1968 was the world concert premiere in Warsaw on September 10, 2002
with the National Philharmonic Orchestra under Antoni Wit. The Cabrillo
performance will be the U.S. premiere.
