A Tribute Concert: the Festival & Lou. The Wall Street Journal called Lou Harrison "the genial, grand old maverick of American music composers" and his death this past February represented an enormous loss. He was inextricably linked to the Cabrillo Festival that he helped found, and to the Festival’s former Music Director of 17 years, his great friend and colleague Dennis Russell Davies. And so, as the Festival and Marin pay tribute to Lou, it is with much anticipation that we welcome Davies back to perform Grand Duo. Lou wrote this piano/violin duo as a gift for his friend Dennis and then-concertmaster Romuald Tecco. It is a glorious piece that was recorded by the Festival in 1991, and later choreographed by Mark Morris. On Sunday, August 3rd at 8pm at the Civic Auditorium, Davies will be joined by Festival concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams for this special performance. Other friends will come to give voice to Lou’s great masterworks, as well. The New Music Works Ensemble, under Music Director Philip Collins, will perform Concerto in Slendro. Written by Harrison aboard the S.S. New York en route to Japan, "It is filled with [Lou’s] eager anticipation of a first taste of the beauty and bustle of Asia." Baritone Sanford Sylvan, who so brilliantly performed in the Festival’s 2001 production of Harrison’s opera Rapunzel, will break from his Carmel Bach performances to make a special guest appearance. The evening also includes a sneak preview of video footage from Eva Soltes’ upcoming documentary on the composer’s life. The filmmaker spent more than two decades capturing the rich and textured life and times of Harrison, and excerpts of he work will be woven into this special tribute. It’s a fond farewell and respectful salute from this Festival and its artists to our elder statesman, a musical genius and friend, Lou Harrison.

A very special post-Tribute-concert "Encore" recital & reception. Encore ticketholders are invited to gather round the piano with Dennis Russell Davies, Music Director Marin Alsop, and guest artists from the evening’s performance for a special encore following the night’s Tribute Concert. In this more intimate setting, Dennis Russell Davies will perform two Harrison piano works, one from Lou’s early years, his Third Piano Sonata of 1938, and another more recent work, his Sonata for Keyboard written in 2000. Guests will enjoy champagne and hors d’ourves along with stories and remembrances, renewal of acquaintances, and the celebration of an extraordinary life shared to the fullest. In this way, the circle becomes completed — Lou Harrison, the Cabrillo Festival, Dennis Russell Davies, the artists, and you, his friends and fans.

Tickets to this event are $50. Attendance is limited and Full Subscribers will be given priority on a date received basis.
