Yumi Hwang-Williams, Concertmaster of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra,
began studying the violin at the age of ten at a local public school in
Philadelphia, one year after emigrating from South Korea. Two years later,
she entered the New School of Music, now part of Temple University, on
full scholarship to the college program to study with Yumi Ninomiya Scott.
By the age of fifteen, she had appeared as soloist with the Philadelphia
Orchestra and was accepted as a student of Jascha Brodsky at the prestigious
Curtis Institute of Music, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree.
She has also studied with Sylvia Rosenberg, Joseph Silverstein, Felix
Galimir, and David Arben, former Associate Concertmaster of the Philadelphia
Orchestra, who continues to be her mentor.
During the 1999-2000 season, Yumi Hwang-Williams made her solo debut
with the Colorado Symphony, with Marin Alsop conducting. She also made
her debut with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra playing the Dvorak Violin
Concerto with Paavo Jarvi, Music Director designate, on the podium. This
performance marked the first time in the 105-year history of the symphony
that the Principal Second Violinist, the post she had held since 1995,
was invited as a soloist. Both performances received high critical acclaim:
"...her rich, focused tone and marvelous technique..."; "(her) virtuosic
passages were impressive, but above all, she communicated with a natural
ease." Hwang-Williams' other solo appearances include performances of
Lament and Prayer by Aaron Jay Kernis with the Cabrillo Music Festival
Orchestra; several engagements with the Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra
of Philadelphia; and performances with the Mozart Society Orchestra, Cincinnati
Sinfonietta, among others.
Hwang-Williams is also an avid chamber musician and recitalist. She was
a founding member of the Felix Quartet, and has participated in many distinguished
series including the Linton Music Series, Friends of Chamber Music, Taft
Museum Artist Series, Wyoming Fine Arts, and Morgan Library Artists Series.
She has collaborated in the Copland Festival and Mozart Festival with
the Colorado Symphony along with guest artists Jon Kimura Parker and Christopher
O'Riley.
Yumi Hwang-Williams is serving her fourth season as Concertmaster of
the Cabrillo Music Festival. Her extensive orchestral experience began
with her position as core member of the Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra.
She also played four seasons with the Philadelphia Orchestra, joining
them on several international and domestic tours under the direction of
Riccardo Muti and Wolfgang Sawallisch.
Hwang-Williams recently married Daniel Williams, who plays Second Horn
with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She divides her time between Denver and
Philadelphia.
